Since 1969, WLIW has remained firmly committed to the mission of public television, presenting programming and outreach projects that educate, enlighten and entertain as an innovative broadcast center and educational resource for the New York metropolitan area.
Impact
- PBS affiliate broadcasting in the #1 Designated Market Area (DMA) in the country
- Ranked 3 out of 355 national PBS stations for weekly viewership.
- An average weekly cumulative audience of 1.4 million households throughout the New York tri-state area: New York City’s five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey and Connecticut. More than half of WLIW21’s primetime audience lives in New York City and approximately 30% live on Long Island.
- Measurable public support of our programs and practices - nearly half of our income is generated from tri-state area viewers.
Innovation
- As one of the most prolific producers of PBS fundraising programming, WLIW covers a wide range of program genres and topics in specials distributed nationally to PBS stations. Our award-winning, nationally recognized productions include cultural documentaries (THE ITALIAN AMERICANS, THE CHINESE AMERICANS and THE PUERTO RICANS: OUR AMERICAN STORY are among more than a dozen titles); the aerial VISIONS series; and concert performances from Tony Bennett, Il Divo, Celtic Thunder, Sarah Brightman, Carly Simon, Bowfire, mariachi music hosted by Plácido Domingo, and the world renowned Polish dance troupe Mazowsze. In 2007, WLIW produced the acclaimed World War II documentary NEW YORK GOES TO WAR.
- In a groundbreaking endeavor, WLIW New York distributes BBC WORLD NEWS live to approximately 280 U.S. public television stations, reaching approximately 90% of U.S. TV households. This unprecedented partnership with the BBC places WLIW on the cutting edge of news broadcasting.
- WLIW serves as presenting station for the national weekly series WILD CHRONICLES and CONSUELO MACK WEALTHTRACK, as well as the children’s series SHEIRA & LOLI’S DITTYDOODLE WORKS, MIFFY AND FRIENDS, and Emmy-winner JAKERS! THE ADVENTURES OF PIGGLEY WINKS. WLIW also distributes lifestyle series MOMENT OF LUXURY and REAL MOMS, REAL STORIES, REAL SAVVY, and the musical travel series CLASSICAL DESTINATIONS.
- WLIW CREATE (ch. 133 on iO Interactive Optimum from Cablevision and ch. 871 on Verizon FiOS) offers enthusiasts a 24/7 destination for their favorite public television cooking, crafting and travel series. WLIW WORLD (ch. 132 on iO Interactive Optimum from Cablevision and ch. 873 on Verizon FiOS) offers the best of public television’s news, science and history programming 24/7.
Commitment to Community
- Instructional Television Services (ITV) programming brings the power of television as an instructional tool into the classroom with support materials at wliw.org/itv. WLIW21’s EdVideo Online video streaming and downloading service gives Long Island teachers access to an additional 2,000 ITV titles online. In March, WLIW co-hosts the “Teaching & Learning Celebration” with Thirteen/WNET in New York City. Introduced in 2006, the two-day conference features workshops and renowned speakers.
- Local productions cover political and social issues, including the weekly series Q&A and CROSSON AND WELLES, mental health series HEALTHY MINDS, and periodic “town hall meeting” broadcasts like Learning Curve and EMERGENCY: ARE WE READY?. WLIW also produced the local historical documentaries NEW YORK WAR STORIES and THE JEWS OF NEW YORK. WLIW’s local programming has been recognized with numerous accolades from the Fair Media Council, the New York State Broadcasters Association, the Telly Awards and the Press Club of Long Island’s Media Awards (visit wliw.org/productions for details).
The Future
As television enters the digital age, multi-casting and high-definition broadcasting will expand WLIW's potential in ways we can only begin to imagine.
WLIW21 relies on many different resources for its support in providing these valuable services -
station members, volunteers, corporate sponsors, community groups and governmental funding all contribute to fulfilling the mission of the station. WLIW21 looks forward to a continued partnership with the tri-state area as truly public television.
